Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) celebrates World Food Day

Getting the right nutrition to children, who are growing their minds and bodies is vital for their well-being and ability to learn. Eating a breakfast and lunch with fibre and nutrients will sustain the children at school and ensure they are attentive and focused in class.

BbP has launched a Nutrition Education Program to teach children and their parents what the right foods are for learning.

Today for World Food Day, celebrated with the theme “Right to foods for a better life and a better future”, Bbp children have been learning to “build a lunch box” of nutritious snacks.

BbP children are being encouraged to “eat a rainbow” of differently coloured fruits and vegetables as well as rice, fish, eggs and peanuts every day to give them the health and energy to be attentive and focused in class.

The suggested foods in the BbP Nutrition Guide are affordable and readily available for parents. In order to teach children to distinguish between foods, the guide refers to the foods as ‘everyday’ foods (fruits, vegetables, fish, rice, eggs) and ‘sometimes’ foods (lollies, cookies, chips, soda - foods that contain a lot of salt, sugar, oils and a long list of artificial ingredients).

Volunteers from Deloitte, which included Dulika Wijesuriya, Jacob Walu, Jacobeth Bera, Madlyn Mano, Mia Advincula, Nellie Makamet, Stephanie Potoi, Andrew Harris, and Jurgen Mati had a fun day delivering healthy fresh fruit snacks for the children’s “build a lunch box” activity for students enrolled at BbP’s 6 Mile Library Learning Centre. The children did lots of colouring-in of their Nutrition Activity books and are starting to learn all about getting their superpowers from eating correct foods.

As part of BbP’s newly launched Nutrition Education program, BbP is currently also trialling a breakfast program with Sanitarium, Australian Export Consortia (AEC) and Market 2000, which seeks to measure the impact of having had a fibre-rich and nutrition rich breakfast before starting class.  The AEC team took the occasion of World Food Day to check in on the Library Learning Centre to see how the children are enjoying their breakfast.
