Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) celebrates Global Handwashing Day with Deloitte

The day is celebrated each year on the 15th of October. The theme set by World Health Organisation this year is: “Why are clean hands still important? Because it helps stop the spread of harmful germs in healthcare.” All BbP’s Library Learning Centres have been busy washing hands and learning about germs with the children.

Volunteers from Deloitte, which included Dianne Peliokai, Partner for Strategy, Risk and Transactions and team Alice Makati, Belle Hekau, Christine Gebia, Dulika Wijesuriya, Fonga Miki, Georgina Kila, Kopi Piti, Nathelyn Sariaman, Melynda Powaseu and Nellie Makamet had a fun day participating in proper hand hygiene awareness to the children enrolled at BbP’s Pari and Vabukori Library Learning Centres.

The activities included a “Worms & Germs” session to learn what these germs are and where they are found. The Deloitte volunteers helped the children to get their hands painted to represent the 4 types of germs (bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa) and how to avoid them by washing hands with lots of soap and clean water. It’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infections, including colds, flu and diarrhea. The children also enjoyed a fun bubble dance – chasing after bubbles with their clean hands.

As part of BbP’s newly launched Nutrition Education program, enrolled children are learning when to and the proper way to wash their hands by using the organisations’ ‘PNG Nutrition Guide and Activity Book’ which teaches the children all about the importance of good hand hygiene with lots of fun activities. Hand hygiene is a very important part of nutritional health and needs to be encouraged from a young age. Buk bilong Pikinini is grateful to Deloitte for their support for the day.
